Elvis and Esther

Sometimes goats give you a lot of warning that they are going to be kidding soon.  And sometimes they don’t!  We were all hanging out at the barn waiting for the Vet to arrive to check on Red Bird.  I had the children all out front.  I was standing in the sunshine outside of Red Bird’s stall when I heard a goat grunting.  I looked around to figure out who was grunting and why and in the stall farthest from me I saw a goat with a big bubble!  I yelled, “Bubble” and started climbing the fence.

In less than two minutes everyone was in the stall and within 5 minutes, Elvis was born.

A few minutes after that, after Jim easily repositioned one of her legs, Esther was born.

Esther at 5.6 pounds is the smallest goat we’ve had born this year.  (The smallest goat we’ve ever had born weighed 4 pounds).  She looks just a lot like Reluctant, only smaller and with white legs.

It was the fastest birth we’ve had (if you don’t count Vanish and Venice).  I would love it if they all could be that easy.

Seven pregnant goats done. Ten more to go!

Kid count: 6 bucklings. 8 doelings.
