Varsity and Vereena

We had just finished watching the Super Bowl half-time show when we got the call from the barn.

The Super Bowl was forgotten – well, maybe not forgotten, but abandoned – as we rushed to get to the barn. The locker room was crowded as nine of us pushed each other around, trying to get to our own lockers. Coveralls were pulled on, boots in the wrong locker were tossed over everyone’s heads – to say the least, it was chaos.

Both Persephone and Valley were close to kidding, and nobody knew which one we were running out there for, but we all wanted to be out there as quickly as possible.

When we got out to the barn, we found Valley in kidding pen A, and Persephone in kidding pen B. Valley was in active labor, and Persephone was on her way there, so we gathered in kidding pen A but kept sending someone to go check on Seph.

Valley didn’t labor particularly quickly. I kept an eye on the game on my phone, and we joked about Valley being the one to interrupt the Super Bowl. While Valley is one of our favorites, she can be a pain in the rear sometimes.

Eventually, Valley started pushing hard, and soon we had our first girl on the ground!

We decided to name her Varsity. We couldn’t think of anything Super Bowl related to name a baby that started with VA, but as one of the boys said, “at least Varsity is a sports name.”

Fletcher took Varsity out of the pen and into the milk room, just in time, because Valley started pushing again and a few minutes later, we had another baby girl!

The boys decided that we were going to name her Vereena – apparently there’s some football player named Vereen or something? I don’t know. (My idea of watching the Super Bowl meant writing during the actual football and watching the commercials. LOL)

We brought Vereena into the milk room to join her sister, and I started preparing their collars and doing their paperwork. I had just finished putting Varsity’s collar on when someone came barreling into the milk room – “Persephone’s kidding!”
