One of the fun things we enjoy doing as a family is making homemade pizza. Jim is mainly responsible for the pizza crust once I’ve made the dough using our regular bread recipe.
Once the dough is on the pizza cookie sheets, we cook them for about 8 minutes at 350 til they are fully cooked:
We then add our secret ingredient to amazing pizza – basil pesto. We grow our own basil, make pesto, and freeze it in ice cube trays for the winter:
Spread the pesto over the crust:
Add tomato sauce (seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic powder, italian seasoning, and a pinch of sugar):
Add Parmesan cheese:
We then start topping the different pizzas with whatever we want. This one got sliced yellow bell peppers and sauteed red onions:
We added sausage and pepperoni and bacon bits to some of the pizzas:
Followed by lots of shredded mozzarella cheese!:
Jade likes hers with just cheese:
Then pop it in a 350 degree oven til the cheese is melted:
Take it out of the oven and slice it up so it is ready to serve:
We don’t have any photos after this because it is so good we’re too busy eating it!
Be aware that if you’re going to put as much topping on your pizzas as we do, you need to make sure the crust is fairly thick and thoroughly cooked before topping it. If your crust is not sufficient to support all your toppings, you can always use a fork and knife.
Do you ever make your own pizza?
this looks so yummy!!
You know it is!!

We have pizza and movie night each week. I use the bread maker to make the dough. Ours is pretty thin so I have never pre-baked it. I might have to try that though. I make tomato sauce for the kids and alfredo for our pizza (I am not a tomato fan.) We top them with mozzarella, pepperoni, mushrooms and home-cured and smoked bacon. Some weeks we will make calzones and sometimes pizza balls (balls without the sauce served with sauce on the side for dipping) just to mix it up!
ooh – that bacon sounds yummy! I love calzones. We make those too!! PJ
What’s your pesto recipie?
Ummm… I don’t really have measurements for you. I put extra virgin olive oil in the blender. Add a lot of parmesan, a whole bunch of garlic cloves and then fill it with basil. I start blending and add more olive oil as is needed to get it to blend. Then I taste it. LOL And add more of what I think it nees. My daughter is laughing at me and says, “You’re so scientific, Mom” 🙂 PJ
