Kids Cooking – Homemade Marshmallows

Every holiday season (and sometimes during the year) our family makes homemade marshmallows.  They are ridiculously good and nothing like store bought marshmallows.  You will need an electric mixer for the recipe.  A candy thermometer is not necessary, but is very helpful. This time, Brett made them (she has been trained on how to cook them).

First she pulls out the kid friendly recipe and a dry erase marker.

She added the gelatin first:

She then added the water:

As she went, she checked things off:

Next she added water to a saucepan:

Then added the sugar:

Then stirred and waited for the temperature to reach 240 degrees F:

Once it reached 240 F, she added the water and gelatin mix:

While she waited for the mix to cool, she buttered 2 9×13 pans:

Then she coated it with powdered sugar:

And rubbed it into the butter:

Next she came back to the gelatin mix on the stove, and added salt:

Then Vanilla:

She poured it into the mixer*:

And waited for the consistency to get just right:

Then she poured half into each casserole pan:

She placed it in a cool, dry place for about 1 hour.

Once they had set, she cut them into cubes:

And rolled them in powdered sugar:

Recipe

Printable (kid friendly) recipe

In a bowl, combine (til softened)

  • 3/4 cup water
  • 2 envelopes (2 Tbsp) unflavored gelatin

Set aside.
In a medium saucepan, combine

  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 cups sugar

Cook until small amount dropped in cold water forms a soft ball.
(240 degrees F with a candy thermometer)
Remove from heat.
Add softened gelatin.
Stir until almost cold.
Add

  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Beat until syrup is white and thick using a french whip attachment on high.
(This can take 8-10 minutes)
Grease 9×13″ pan and dust with powdered sugar.
Let set in a cool place for about an hour (not in refrigerator).
Turn out on a board that has been well dusted with powdered sugar.
Cut into cubes (we make ours about 2″x2″, but you can make them smaller).
Dip each cube in powdered sugar.

Eat plain or serve with hot chocolate.

Soooo good!
