Busy Mom’s Survival Guide Podcast Episode 019.
One of my all-time favorite books is Margin: Restoring Emotional, Physical, Financial, and Time Reserves to Overloaded Lives* by Richard Swenson. This is a concept that is really important to a well-balanced life and it is a book that I highly recommend. If you have margin in your life, you have the resources to handle the unexpected. You also have time to play with your children and relax with your siblings.
According to Swenson,
“Margin is the amount allowed beyond that which is needed. It is something held in reserve for contingencies or unanticipated situations. Margin is the gap between rest and exhaustion, the space between breathing freely and suffocating. It is the leeway we once had between ourselves and our limits.”
During this podcast episode I talk about how important it is to restore margin to your lives. Brett joins me and talks about this concept at work in her life.
I also share with you some of what I have done over the years to make sure that I keep enough margin for our family to succeed. Like most things, the amount of margin in your life is dynamic and you have to continually revisit and readjust. Otherwise, today’s fast-paced culture will rob you of your margin and the result is stress and a feeling of being overwhelmed.
Thanks for listening! Join me next week as I discuss disciplining yourself, and your children.

I just listened to this a couple of weeks ago, and it couldn’t be more timely. I feel like I have less margin in my life now than I have ever had. I bought the book…can’t wait to read it.
I hope you really enjoy it. Margin is one of the few books that I read over and over because the margin in my life is constantly being eroded!
