Homestead Happenings April 2019

We had a busy April on the farm! Between setting up new cameras, visits from Grammy, gardening, new braces, and more, it’s hard to believe April is already over!

One of the best parts of April was listening to Landon learn how to laugh and giggle!

The garden is continuing to grow well! We’re eating broccoli, asparagus, lettuce, cilantro, and arugula.

We spent a lot of time pruning the blackberries and transplanting raspberries. We’re also getting our drip hoses put back in the bed so we can start to water once the weather starts to get hot. (Do you like the way Colter is flexing in this picture? He was joking around with Emery, who just happened to catch it on camera. 😉

We will be planting all of our hot weather plants – tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash, basil, and lots more – soon!

Baby Goats

The baby goats are continuing to grow. Most of the alpines have gone to their new homes, which makes it easier to take care of the remaining goats.

We did lose Gable – the smallest goat we’ve ever had born alive. She was only 1 pound 5 oz at birth and was never very healthy. Oakley, who was born at 1 pound 10 oz, was much more vigorous at birth than Gable ever was. The day before we lost her, we did take a moment to take a photo of Gable with Vladimir, who is our largest goat at about 220 pounds.

The concrete behind the Nigie barn was completed this month. It looks awesome and the goats are making great use of it!

The weather has turned really nice and we’ve taken advantage of it to have some fun family dinners at the fire pit.

Grammy, Aunt Kristin, and Cousin Mason came and spent a few days with us. We had a wonderful visit (even though no baby goats were born for them).

Indigo had braces on her top teeth a few years ago and finally lost enough baby teeth that she was able to get them back on. Her top teeth only need a little more work, but her bottom teeth are going to take a lot!

Jim and I both went to the University of Virginia. The whole family was bummed last year with UVa’s shocking loss in the 1st round of the NCAA tournament.

But their ultimate victory was even sweeter because of it! Jim got to go to the Elite Eight (Purdue vs UVa) game with some fraternity brothers and had a blast. UVA wins in Louisville

I warned the children that they would probably never have another year like this where all their favorite teams – Red Sox, Patriots, and UVa – all became Champions in their respective leagues.

We’re so glad that Spring is here and we’re all enjoying being back outside – especially Landon! We hope those of you in northern climates are starting to see some green grass and sunshine.
