If your children are like mine, they’re always wanting to tackle new challenges. Jade has been very excited lately to learn how to cook. One of the first full meals she is able to make all by herself is French Toast. I do slice the homemade bread for her so the slices are relatively uniform. She starts with a good attitude and all of her ingredients:
Then she washes her hands with goat milk soap:
She adds goat milk to the blender (about a cup, but it’s not exact):
She cracks at least 1 dozen eggs into the blender*:
Makes sure the lid is secure and blends:
She adds some cinnamon:
And flax seeds:
And blends again:
Then she pours the mixture into a bowl:
And dips the homemade bread into the egg mixture:
She sprinkles the top of each slice with whole flax seed:
Then carefully flips the french toast:
And serves it to her siblings (her favorite part!):
Then it’s time to enjoy!
I have found that for the younger children, blending the eggs is a lot easier than trying to mix them. If they accidentally drop in any egg shells, they can remove them or blend up any smaller pieces. The blender does a better job than they can, so there are no big “eggy” parts that stck to the bread.
Jade also gets her hands covered in egg, so I always make sure there is a stool at the kitchen sink so she can climb down from where she is working and climb up to the sink. She knows how to properly wash her hands and turn the faucet on with her elbow.
With your younger children, you want to make sure to have a good spatula (I prefer the wooden one with a long handle). I also prefer using an electric griddle as opposed to having them cook over an open flame. Just be sure to cover the safety rules with them when they’re young and go over them until you are comfortable they can handle it. I also never have the younger children cook with heat unless there is someone older in the kitchen.
Jade had just turned six when these photos were taken and with the exception of cutting the bread, she can make french toast for the entire family start to finish. It’s a great kid-friendly meal for young children that may not be reading yet.
Good Job, Jade… We, too LOVE French toast.. I never thought of putting flax seeds in there and on top of the bread slices. Speaking of flax seeds… one of our favorite snacks – especially for a football game or whenever.. to put peanut butter on celery sticks and sprinkle with whole flax seeds.. It is yummy , easy, and healthy !! I make a tray of ’em when we have people over and it’s always enjoyed !
We love our flax seeds around here. I use them in/on just about everything! PJ
Way to go Jade. This is something my two kids would like to do. I have never let them make FT. I guess we are having french toast this weekend too.
Love it! Let me know how it goes. 🙂 PJ
You are AWESOME Jade!!! You need to come over to my house and teach my 18 year old daughter a thing or 2!!! Great job!!
She would love to do that. LOL PJ
That’s great that your daughter at such a young age knows how to cook everyone French toast. Before you know it she’ll be taking over dinner duty.
Yep – she’s certainly capable of it! PJ
Wow! Great job Jade for cooking for the family 🙂
Yes – she’s pretty impressive. PJ
Jade wanted to tell everyone, “Thanks. I like cooking. Everybody says ‘thank you’ to me!”
Nice tutorial:-) My 8 year old twins love making their own french toast.
It’s such a great meal when you forgot to prep something!!
