At the Jonas House, we try to cook healthy foods. As a result, unhealthy foods tend to be special treats instead of standard fare.
One of our treats that is both healthy and special is homemade cinnamon rolls. To make this we make bread dough using freshly ground wheat and flax seeds. I don’t bother to let it rise, but roll it out into a rectangle. We smother this with raw honey and lots and lots of cinnamon (sometimes the children will sprinkle in some sugar if I’m not looking). Then we roll it and slice them up. Bake at 350.
I add flax seeds to the dough because they are one of my secret, healthy whole foods. Even though they’re tiny, they’re filled with lots of good for you stuff. You can read more about how and why I use flax seeds, but whether or not you add them to your cinnamon rolls, there’s no denying that fresh from the oven, cinnamon rolls are a fantastic, healthy treat.
Do you have any healthy treats that your family just loves?

Hi PJ, I just finished your post about flax seeds and I have had some ground flex seed meal in the cupboard for some time so it will go rancid too? Just curious, am going to throw out if it is. Is there anyway to figure out if it has gone bad? Thanks so much and I loved the video of the triplets being born. Your family is so awesome, love watching the kids be involved!!
Hi Kandi,
Thank you so much! The kids do a lot of work around here, we definitely couldn’t do what we do without them!
Personally, I don’t ever use ground flax seed, and if I did, I would keep it in the freezer, not the cupboard. So yes, if it were me – I would throw it out.
