Dinner for Ten

I love our family dinners. In the last six months, especially, the conversations are so much fun and we have a great time. The children always say something funny that makes us all laugh. And it’s the kind of laughter where we’re laughing with each other and not at each other.

Last night was classic.

We had pizza for dinner and Hewitt started things right off.

Me: “Hewitt, be careful, the pizza is hot.”

Hewitt: “I don’t care about the hot. I care about the eating.”

Me to myself: “Definitely have to remember that one!”

A little while later the phone rang. Sometimes we answer the phone during dinner and sometimes we don’t. I decided to answer it and went into the bedroom (because as entertaining as our dinners are, they are never, EVER quiet).

When I came back, everyone was rolling on the floor laughing (ok, not literally).

I asked what I had missed.

Apparently, when I left, everybody started moving around. Fletcher then said, “Whoever’s seat you’re sitting in, that’s who you are.”

Jim said that Jade immediately jumped up, ran to my empty chair, climbed into it, and said in a high, falsetto voice: “Now, children… I’d like you to meet my husband, Jim.”

I’m not sure what else she would have said, because that was when everyone fell out of their chairs and started rolling on the floor.

Jade is just so funny.

Later that night, after I had put both her and Indigo to bed she got up again and came to my room.

Jade: “When is it morning?”

Me: “When the sun comes up.”

Jade: “How do I know if the sun is up?”

Me: “If you can see the sun, then it’s morning and you can get up.”

Jade: “If Indi and Me say, ‘I think it’s morning’ – then can we get up?”

Me: “No. It has to actually BE morning.”

Jade: “If Indi and Me say, ‘The sun is up’ – then can we get up?”

Me: “No. The sun has to actually BE up.”

Jade: “Good night, Mommy.”

Me: “Good night Jady Bug.”
