First Trip to the ER in 2010

If someone had asked me to wager who would be the first kid to need a trip to the ER, I would have guessed Jade. She’s just a menace and into everything. LOL

But I would have guessed wrong.

I was making dinner yesterday and asked Brett to go cut me some chives from the herb garden. She went outside. A few minutes later I heard Indigo crying from outside. It wasn’t the kind of cry that makes moms go running.

Moms, you know what I mean. There’s the “I got hurt” cry where they come to you and you kiss the boo boo and make it better. And then there’s the kind of cry that chills your blood and sends you running toward the source.

Well, this was just an average cry. I knew Brett was out there, so I figured she’d take care of it, and bring Indigo to me if she needed some Mommy kissing and snuggling.

Well, Brett did bring her to me. But unfortunately she brought her to me with a big piece of wood from the front porch stuck in her foot. Normally Jim is the splinter doctor around here, but he was at wrestling and this couldn’t wait for him to get home since it was sticking 8 inches out of her foot. So I sat her down and went to pull it out. But first I felt to see how far into her foot it was – and it kept going and going. That thing was stuck 2-3 inches into her foot!!!

At this point, I got that queasy mom feeling and ran to the phone to call Jim to tell him to get his butt home. But of course he didn’t answer. So I told Brett to grab everybody and buckle them in the car. Brett was thinking very clearly (yeah, Brett!) and suggested that I leave Hewitt and Jade home with her and just take Greyden with me. So we carefully buckled Indigo into her car seat and off we drove.

First I swung by our doctor’s office – of course they were already closed. Then we went to wrestling practice. I walked in – Jim saw me, knew it wasn’t good that I was there, and followed me out to the car. He quickly confirmed my diagnosis that this was a visit to the ER. So off we went.

The doctor numbed her foot and withdrew the splinter (it was really a piece of wood) and then washed it out thoroughly. Indigo was incredible, whimpered some, but was really good while he removed it. While he was cleaning it, she pronounced that it – tickled! “Really, Mom, it does.” The doctor told her she was the best little girl he’d had in… a year! She also had to have 3 x-rays to make sure they got all of it and was sent home with antibiotics and pain reliever.

The funny part of the visit was when we were sitting in the waiting room talking with the other patients. They were asking about our children and I said, “I have three more children at home. I left Hewitt, Indigo, and Jade with Brett.” Indigo who was snuggled on my lap pipes up and says, “No, Mom. You brought me with you, don’t you remember?” Of course I do, sweetie, Mommy’s just getting old.

I didn’t have a camera with me. But jim snapped a picture of Indigo with his phone. Don’t look if you’re squeamish.

Update: this happened last week and Indigo is recovering well.  Her foot is very bruised, but she’s not in pain anymore.

  1. Oh poor little one! And poor you! She certainly handled that like a champ! You must be so proud of both her and Brett!

  2. I know, it's kind of misleading to even call it a splinter. She was great. It's really kinda funny to watch her head outside, stop, turn around, and go fetch a pair of shoes.

  3. Poor thing! Glad she did so well. Our only ER experience with Jonas was pretty traumatizing (for all of us).

    And go Brett! 🙂
