Being an Entrepreneur

I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur. To create something. To grow something. To be in charge of something. I never had any idea that the business I would start would be based on  soap (and certainly not goat milk soap). That was purely God’s idea and His timing. But during high school, I always said that I wanted to be a CEO some day. And now I am!

Goat Milk Stuff

And do you know what I’ve discovered?

Being an Entrepreneur and CEO is a lot harder than I thought it would be! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. I actually like hard work. But I had no idea how hard ‘hard work’ could be til I started Goat Milk Stuff. For the past two years, Jim and I have worked 70 – 80+ hours a week getting Goat Milk Stuff running to the point that it could support our family.

And now…

Goat Milk Stuff is finally to the point that Jim and I can slow down a bit and start working a more normal schedule.  To that end, we’ve hired somebody to help us (me) out in the office. Her name is Gretchen and some of you may already have interacted with her.  She’s wonderful and is doing a great job. She actually does a bit of everything – printing postage, packaging orders, answering phone calls, answering emails, making bath bombs and fizzies, posting testimonials to the website.  Basically – whatever needs doing the most!

This is allowing me to tackle some of the items that I’ve wanted to tackle for months, but been unable to due to lack of time.  Jim is still making all the soap and the children are still doing all the cutting, bagging, and unmolding.

As we turn our attention to 2011, we’d like to ask for your input and feedback. What would you like to see us do differently in 2011? And what would you like us to keep the same? We truly value everyone’s input and feedback. You’ve helped us to make Goat Milk Stuff what it is today.

If any of you are considering starting your own business, I’d say go for it!  Be prepared to work hard – but I think the hard work is worth it. I LOVE being an entrepreneur!

  1. I would love to buy your soap, but my son is severly allergic to all dairy which includes him eating or touching it. I am afraid to bring your goat milk soap into the house. If you could make a soy base soap or using something other than goat milk, I really would love to try your product.

  2. Would you be thinking of hiring this summer? I live in southern IN, and would LOVE to work with ya'll. We are close friends with the Vessels and we actually met you all at a craft fair a couple of years ago. Please let me know if you are thinking of hiring a part-time worker.

    Thanks!

  3. Hi LittleBirdies – I'm sorry your son is so severely allergic. If you want to email me, we can talk about making you a custom batch, as I don't think we'll ever regularly do soap without milk.

  4. Hi Chrissy – you never know what will happen this summer. Why don't you send me an email with your contact info and then you can email me again closer to summer?

    Thanks,
