How To Build A Pole Barn 101

When we have a barn/building that needs to be built, we call Mr. McNew. Not only is he a great hunter (he has brought us up to 4 deer in one day), but he also builds great pole barns. So when we need a new goat shelter, or an addition to our barn, all the children know that…

Loading Out

Yesterday I wrote about the first day of the KY State Fair. The second day that we did the fair, was also the last day of the fair. This meant that everybody had to pack up all their stuff and load their vehicles. All of the other vendors were loading up their stuff from the back…

The Kentucky State Fair

Because we have a family business, we go to lots of festivals and craft fairs. We have found that the shorter craft shows work better for us, because then we can do them without all of us crashing at the end of the show. Unfortunately, we learned this lesson the hard way. In 2009, we did…

Rewards are Good

If you are a long-time reader of our blog, you probably know that Emery and I used to play violin. In 2008, we were a part of the band/orchestra for our Christmas carol sing. We had a blast doing that, and I still remember it VERY well. Although, I remember all of our Christmas Sings…

What is the Best Goat to Get?

When we first got dairy goats, I read everything I could find before purchasing my first goats. Unfortunately, all the stuff that I read did not prepare me very well for finding and raising dairy goats. I was not very patient and found the first goats that I could. I quickly added many others. We…

Where’s the Milk?

For several years, we’ve had plenty of milk to make our soap and feed our kids (both human and goat). This year, however, we find ourselves chronically short on milk. Baby goats can drink a lot of milk. Right now, we’re bottle feeding 12 goat kids aged 1-6 weeks. Combined, they’re drinking over 6 gallons…

Why???

Why do boys like to do things the uncomfortable/difficult way? For instance… Why do they like to wear the footy pajamas that have holes in them? (Even though Mom told them they should be put in the trash…and they have others that they could wear). Why do they like to lie down on the bottom…

Do You…

Do you like to play in the park? My brothers do: Do you like to watch the others, if you are too small to play? Jade does: Do you think that Daddy is a loon for taking pictures instead of playing? Emery does: Do you think that you are going to catch better if you…

Efficient Solar Energy Conversion

I’ve always been amazed at the way God can take some seed, rain, and sunshine, then multiply it and turn it into food for many. We can help this process along by being good stewards of our gardens, but every year, I have food that is produced that I didn’t plant or take care of. We…

How Many Can YOU Do??

This morning, after we were all awake, Mom challenged all of us to a jumping jack contest. The person who could do the most jumping jacks without stopping, would get extra chocolate chips in their pancakes!!! Everyone wanted to win. You see, my brothers are boys. And my Mom is a Mom. So she never puts…

Hold Up, Boys!

One of our favorite things to do in the Spring and Fall is go hiking in the woods at the Charlestown State Park. It’s also great fun to swing from hanging tree branches: The boys always like to be in the front. So most of the time we have a great view of their backs:…

Twas The Week Before Christmas

It was a week before Christmas, 2007. All of the presents had arrived. The Christmas Tree was set up, and we had our turkey. All was in readiness for Christmas morning. Then Mom and Dad announced that we would be leaving, driving up to NH, (where Grammy and Gumpy live) and having Christmas with them.…

Where Did We Get Indigo?

Where did we get this girl? Where did she come from? Where did she learn to smile like this? Where did she learn to love everyone so well? Where did she get her curly hair? And why… …do we love her so much? PJ adds: I remember perfectly well where she came from.…

Does Your Skin Need a Low pH Cleanser?

Many goat milk soapers make claims on the web that the pH of goat milk is closer to skin’s pH, therefore it is healthier for your skin than other soaps. While I do believe goat milk soap is better for your skin, using pH as a reason is not correct chemistry. Human skin produces a…

My Brother Emery…

…loves his flowers. And I mean LOVES his flowers! Emery is the one who will suggest that the boys leave flowers on Mom’s pillow if they do something bad. Emery is the one who will keep our table full of pretty flowers during the spring, summer, and fall (along with all of the ants and…
