Homestead Happenings November 2018

Introducing the #WerstBabyEver!

We’d like you all to meet Landon Lee Werst! He arrived on November 15, at 6:28 pm weighing 6 lb 12 oz and measuring 19 inches.

Introducing Landon!

Landon

It was not an easy experience for anybody. Brett was diagnosed with preeclampsia and had to be induced. While being induced she had to also receive magnesium sulfate to prevent the preeclampsia from causing seizures.

The “mag” caused Brett to feel like she had the flu and caused her to vomit repeatedly despite anti-nausea medications. It also is the drug they give women to stop pre-term labor. So in addition to making her feel horrible, it kept her uterus from fully reacting to the Pitocin that was trying to get her uterus to contract.

After 29 hours of labor, she had dilated to 8 cm, but her uterus simply wasn’t having the contractions she needed to fully dilate.

The decision was made to do a c-section which may have saved Landon’s life. When he was born, Landon was not breathing and a “code pink” was declared. (We were later told it was the first code pink birth in 2 years). They did chest compressions and bagged him for 2.5 minutes before they were able to get him breathing on his own.

Landon had multiple chest x-rays and glucose tests and IVs over the next few days. Brett was able to hold him about 5 hours after he was born.

We are all super thankful to God for protecting Landon and Brett. Thank you to everyone who prayed for the both of them. Prayer truly works. Brett is home and recovering well from the c-section. Landon is healthy and gaining weight. Mason is an incredible and loving father who has changed the majority of the diapers.

Landon’s Aunts and Uncles are already in love with him and fighting over who gets to hold him when he visits. Landon is a blessed little boy and we are so thankful to have him as a part of our lives!

Landon’s birth was obviously the big news of the month, but we’ve been pretty busy with all the farm work and holidays as well!

We normally don’t get a lot of snow on the farm – but we’ve already had snow twice!

It may be pretty, but there is a lot of work that comes with having to prepare all the animals for the rapidly dropping temperatures.

Garden in Winter
Of course the first snow of the year isn’t all about work and preparations. The children had plenty of time to goof off and put reindeer antlers on the goats while they enjoyed themselves with the little snow they got.

As the weather turns colder, we’ve spent a lot of time focusing on winterizing, maintenance and general repair work.

Tractor
Greyden learned the hard way that it is important to check the status of the lug nuts on the tractor tires. Theoretically, they should have been factory tightened and not come loose, and yet, the tire falling off was a good indication not to make assumptions.

As Greyden is taking over more and more of the repair work around here, he’s decided to add a

a new skill to his skill set – welding! Farmer John has started to give him lessons and he is very excited about it. He now has his own AC Lincoln welder and as he gains skill it will help him fully manage the repairs here at Goat Milk Stuff. And if he really enjoys it, he may be able to create all sorts of useful tools for the farm some day!

Because Landon was due around Thanksgiving, it was held at our house again this year. As always, we had a blast with the family.

This year Emery slowed down a bit and only made 17 pies (instead of the 24 he made last year!) The key lime pies were the favorite with most people eating much less pumpkin in favor of the key lime. Greyden’s welding skills may come in very handy, but he’s going to have a hard time beating the appreciation for Emery’s pie making skills. LOL

So Many Pies!
Following Thanksgiving, we have one of our busiest weekends of the year as we ship out thousands of orders all over the world. Thank you to everyone who placed orders over the holiday weekend! We did our best to ship them to you super quickly and hope they all arrived safe and sound!

November 2018 will be a month we will never forget as it brought with it the joy of adding another generation to our family. We pray your November was likewise full of events and memories you can give thanks about!
